Range and Habitat: Humid coastal rain forests canopies in Eastern Brazil
Captive/Wild Lifespan: About 30 years.
Gestation: About 125– 132 days twins will be born.
Diet: Omnivore– mostly fruits and tree sap with a lot of insects, lizards, snail and birds. Even birds eggs.
Adaptations: Family care of the newborns is shared by the whole family. Older siblings and both adults take turns caring the babies, as they will not move around on their own for the first 3 months.
IUCN Status: Endangered 2008
Conservation: Habitat loss protection is the main focus while maintaining a healthy breeding population in captivity in the event of extinction.
Did you Know: They have multiple communication sounds many of which sound like bird squeaks and chatter. The adults pair bond.
Here at the CMC Zoo: Chester and Paige are our two resident GLT. Chester was born on March, 3 1998 and came to us in June of 2001. Paige is a little younger being born on March 6, 2010 and came to us in July 2013. Chester is a skeptical of new people but once he has decided to trust you he is very friendly. They both enjoy Meal worms and will often catch Butterflies to snack on in their exhibit.
